The Buff and The Blazer Episode 3: The Peanut Butter Falcon Review

A Ray of Sunshine for a Modern Audience

Warning: Spoilers below!

The Peanut Butter Falcon which is unashamedly simple, sweet and full of light, probably shouldn’t work for a modern audience. How can a story like that succeed when dark and gritty films like It Chapter 2, Joker, Midsommar, The Lighthouse and Brightburn dominate the box office? It’s due in large part to great characters and a stellar cast led by Zack Gottsagen. It’s what makes The Peanut Butter Falcon a standout.

Zack’s Inspirational Story

Zack, who’s name is kept in the film (Zak), is the heart and soul of the story. He is locked up in a nursing home as a down syndrome individual with no family ties. Despite that, Zak is determined to follow through with his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. He plans to find his idol, The Salt Water Red Neck and train at his wrestling school. His journey leads him to new friends who become like family. It’s a fresh reminder that even with the odds stacked against us, human will should never be underestimated. Zak’s story can inspire anyone.

A Stellar Cast

The performances in The Peanut Butter Falcon are spectacular across the board. Zack Gottsagen exhibits a pure candor and determination, with the ability to hone in on the insecurities and vulnerabilities of having down syndrome. The film simply does not work without him. His chemistry with Shia LeBeouf is genuine and natural. LeaBeouf on the other hand, brings a free-spirited and confident sensibility to the role of Tyler. He fuels Zak’s ambitions and helps turn them into a reality of sorts. Dakota Johnson brings a maturity and tenderness to the trio of characters. She balances the feeling of genuine concern and apprehension about Zak’s goals, with a motherly-like encouragement with such naturalness.

Those elements, along with with great characters and performances across the board, will soften even the most cynical of movie-goers.
