The Buff and The Blazer Episode 61: Coming 2 America Review

Coming 2 America: Keeping the Spirit Alive

Coming 2 America shares a lot in common with its 80s predecessor. Its storyline feels somewhat borrowed at times, but despite that, it possesses enough of that original spirit to satisfy. The film features almost all of the original cast, including many side characters. But it’s not just seeing familiar faces that give the sequel its charm. Each character’s essence remains intact, and as a viewer, it feels like visiting old friends. The new characters add to the enjoyment and give the film a modern flair. While it may not be the best sequel ever made, it’s still a lot of fun.

Coming to America remains one of Eddie Murphy’s most beloved films. So it goes without saying that expectations for Coming 2 America were high. Some criticize the film for its lack of an original story and rehashing of old plot points. While that may be a fair point, the film’s strength stems more from returning characters like Akeem and Semmi. We find them back to their same shenanigans. Not only do we get a lot of their familiar quirks, but we also get to see how they’ve grown with age. Overall, the two characters remain largely familiar and establish our connection with the film.

Similarly, many iconic supporting characters return as well. James Earle Jones reprises his role as King Jaffa Joffer, and John Amos returns as Cleo McDowell. Shari Headley is also back as Lisa. While they don’t have much screen time, their roles offer a warm sense of nostalgia for the original film fans. Eddie Murphy and Arsenal Hall also reprise their roles as supporting characters such as Randy Watson, Reverend Brown, and the barbershop men. Fans will recognize these characters and many more sprinkled throughout the film.

Coming 2 America also features some new faces, along with some legendary talent. Among some of the new cast are Kiki Layne, Bella Murphy, and Akiley Love, who play Akeem and Lisa’s daughters. Jermaine Fowler plays Akeem’s American son. The addition of these characters breath new life into the story and are a joy to watch. Joining are Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, and Leslie Jones, who add to an already stacked, comedic cast.

If you are a fan of the original film, you will enjoy that same spirit and fun in Coming 2 America.
